First shut down the embassy

By Libby

Juan Cole has an interesting idea today. The new US Embassy in Baghdad is an ongoing horror show that is costing us mega-millions for a project that is fraught with corruption and substandard work, resulting in permanent cost overruns and its opening date has been pushed back into the realm of never. And considering that our career diplomats don't want to be forced to take a dangerous posting that would render them prime targets if the political situation explodes into anti-American violence in Iraq -- a strong possibility if Bush goes through with bombing Iran -- why not simply shut it down?

Dr. Cole suggests Congress defund the project and leave only a bare bones delegation there. Makes a lot of sense to me.
