As the US continues its slow crawl towards fascism, New Zealand takes a giant leap in the direction of direct democracy.
New Zealanders have been given the chance to write their own laws, with a new online tool launched by police.
The "wiki" will allow the public to suggest the wording of a new police act, as part of a government review of the current law, written in 1958. [...]
The final document will be given to a parliamentary committee in 2008 to be considered with other information gathered during the review period.
That's an idea whose time has come. I've been thinking lately that we could use a little dose of direct democracy here. It seems unlikely the great unwashed masses could do any worse a job than our current crop of political hacks.
