More and more, I'm coming to the conclusion that Robert Gates was Pappy Bush's pick - someone to keep an eye on Fourth Branch and the rest of the asylum. He's got a wicked sense of humor too.
After Cheney-camp hack Eric Edelman, the current undersecretary of defense for policy, told Hilary Clinton that he wouldn't comment on Pentagon plans for withdrawing from Iraq because such would be defeatist and encourage the enemy, Gates stepped up and talked about Pentagon plans to withdraw from Iraq. Which put Edelman in the position of calling his own boss a defeatist.
Now, via Laura Rozen, I learn Gates is making Edelman brief Congress on those very plans!
I wonder how long he'll be the current undersecretary of defense for policy?
