I'm going to go out on a limb here and be (among) the first to say that John McCain ain't gonna make it to the Iowa caucuses.
His master plan to stake his whole candidacy on happy talk about Iraq is, quite simply, a loser. I'm sure Republicans tell pollsters that Iraq is a great and glorious enterprise, but come on: even they have to be tired of it by now.
There's one thing that every rational person knows. When you're in a hole, the best strategy is to quit digging. For some reason, John McCain can't put the shovel down. He's nearly done for '08.
It's a shame, too. I liked him for 2000, and I think history has shown that the GOP miscalculated badly by killing his candidacy in South Carolina. Anyone would have been a better president than George Bush, but I think John McCain in particular would have reshaped the Republican Party into a durable one for the 21st century had he won the White House. Now, he's reshaped himself instead, and the GOP is a regional party with a platform of discredited ideas.
