The Associated Press has the following account:
U.S. Senator and Republican presidential candidate John McCain, R-Ariz., says there isn't much America can do about Iran's decision to take British military personnel into custody this morning.Let us be clear what he means - "very decisive action" is diplo-speak for military action. War.
But he says there is something the British can do.
During an interview with WLS Radio in Chicago Friday, McCain said Britain should threaten "very decisive action" for what he calls a gross violation of international law by the Iranians. And he says the United States can only provide moral support.
McCain thinks the UK, with its overstretched military and only a handful of troops or ships in the area should attack Iran in retaliation while the US provides only "moral support"!
For those who think war should be the very last resort, McCain's zeal for the UK and Iran to fight should prove he's too keen on the use of force to ever be president.
And for hawks, a thought. If you believe that Iran is a member of the Axis of Evil and provides an "Islamofascist" threat as great as the threat ever posed by Hitler or Stalin, if you agree that the UK should resort to force in this instance...don't you think the US should provide more than cheering from the sidelines on behalf of its staunchest ally in Iraq? Using the same logic, McCain would have kept the US out of WW2, simply sending "moral support". You shouldn't be supporting McCain as president either.
