In one of the most startlingly mendacious examples of worm-tongued weaselry ever uttered by a member of the Bush administration (and this administration has set a mind-bogglingly high bar for worm-tongued weaselry) Alberto Gonzales has advanced his opinion that the there is no express right to Habeus Corpus in the U.S. Constitution.
Think Progress has the details, along with a video of the claim, which came as Gonzales was debating Arlen Specter about whether the Supreme Court’s ruling on Guantanamo detainees last year cited the constitutional right to habeas corpus. Gonzales claimed the Court did not cite such a right, then added, “There is no express grant of habeas in the Constitution.”
Democracy Now has the right idea - Impeach Gonzales first of all.
