If all every blogger ever did was punchposts, who would we link to? Is the blogosphere an ongoing discussion or simply a new distribution channel for the mainstream media?
Anywway, here's today's snarky punchposts, may the Great God Atrios have mercy on my soul.
"Iraq war architect Paul Wolfowitz said Wednesday that had America been convinced that Iraq had no weapons of mass destruction, it may have considered different invasion or regime change options - including a campaign of support to opposition groups in Iraq." Way to go Paul - leave your old boss, the guy who appointed you to the World Bank, with only one leg to stand on and make sure it's the weakest leg. Gone now are the arguments about saving the Iraqi people or spreading democracy yet the argument about WMD's is the one most likely to be exposed for the lie it is. There is truly no honor among theives.
America is offering a huge carrot to India in an attempt to seduce the Indian Air Force into a purchase of F-16s - buy American and we will let you have the secrets of the F-22 and the F-35! The Indians had previously preferred the French Mirage 2000 which is more easily upgradeable with other nation's technology, but a multi-billion license to the stealth tech of the Raptor is a pretty big inducement. Especially since they can then sell it all to the Russians, with whom they already have a deal to produce a fifth-generation fighter.
The Republicans - reverse Robin Hoods! They first take from the poor by cutting medicaid, food stamps and student loan assistance then they turn around and give more than they saved to the rich in the form of tax cuts. On Thursday they passed three separate tax cuts yesterday and a fourth Friday, trimming the federal revenue by $94.5 billion over five years - nearly double the budget savings that they muscled through the House last month.
According to Israeli military sources, Israel is readying strikes on several Iranian nuclear facilities for sometime in March. My problem is that everyone thinks their air force can't complete a conventional strike. Could they be planning to use nukes?
Meanwhile, Iran opened the door Sunday for U.S. help in building a nuclear power plant — a move designed to ease American suspicions that Tehran is using its nuclear program as a cover to build atomic weapons. The invite doesn't seem to have gotten a warm reception in D.C. even though it would solve all the problems Washington has with Iran's plans and make US contractors pots of money at the same time. I wonder why? For a possible answer, see the item above.
The New York Times says: "We are about to lose New Orleans. Whether it is a conscious plan to let the city rot until no one is willing to move back or honest paralysis over difficult questions, the moment is upon us when a major American city will die, leaving nothing but a few shells for tourists to visit like a museum.
We said this wouldn't happen. President Bush said it wouldn't happen. He stood in Jackson Square and said, "There is no way to imagine America without New Orleans." But it has been over three months since Hurricane Katrina struck and the city is in complete shambles."
The Iraqi insurgency is, predictably, urging fellow Sunni Arabs to vote on Thursday and warning al Qaeda militants not to attack. They are obviously looking to establish a political wing that can negotiate on their behalf for rights and concessions in the new parliament (or become the government of the rump of Iraq if both Shia and Kurds eventually seceede). However, only the starry-eyed hopeful would expect that they will renounce violence while they feel their country is still occupied or if they do not get those concessions from Shiite and Kurdish politicians. Since the latter is even more unlikely than the insurgents laying down their weapons without them, I see a period of ever more violent civil war as well as a war against the Coalition/Occupation by all sides.
Forget "Satanic Child Abuse", it's a myth. But there is a real danger. According to British police the big threat is abuse of kids by evangelical Christians who believe the children are possessed by demons and try to exorcise them. Nineteen children have been rescued by police and social workers from beatings and mental abuse by church members already this year.
