Fundraising Totals Hit the Wires

Candidates have begun to release fundraising figures for the first quarter, and Hillary Clinton commands and unsurprising lead with $26 million raised. Edwards pulled a very respectable $14 million, with the smaller candidates reporting smaller figures.

The Obama campaign did not release numbers yesterday, which may mean that they want the front pages to themselves when they do release them, or it may mean that totals were less than anticipated. We'll know soon.

On the Republican side, Mitt Romney raised a surprising $23 million, with Giuliani pulling about $15 million. McCain has not announced his figures as of right now, and I for one am genuinely curious to see what Sen. Straight Talk managed to pick up for the quarter.

Giuliani's fundraising reportedly surged in March, so it's possible that we'll see shakeups at next quarter's reporting.

I'll update when the other candidates report their figures.

Update: Hotline is reporting that Barack Obama has raised somewhere in the neighborhood of $21 million, and says that this is the moment where Clinton's people will begin to "crap bricks". This is all speculative; Obama has not yet released figures.

Further Update: McCain announced $12.5 million. He's been lowering expectations for a while, and the announcement restates the disappointment. As Greg Sargent notes, it really is a sign of the times when $12.5 mil for the first quarter necessitates an apology.
