Drugs and the presidency

By Libby

Funny how our worldview has changed in the last 15 years. Take for example, this NYT piece on Obama's youthful drug use. Bill Clinton was roundly mocked for minimizing his own dalliance with marijuana when he stated he "didn't inhale." Now Obama is under fire for overstating his own experiences with the drug culture, the implication apparently being that he is using his teenage experimentation as a tool to establish some kind of street cred -- or something.

Personally, I don't give a flying leap about anybody's past drug use. What I care about is their stance on the war on some drugs today. Hillary's position is about as abysmal as the GOP's embrace of another war they would like to last forever. Obama's is marginally better, that is when he's not revising his rhetoric to suit his audience. So far, it looks like my hope for a candidate who will endorse common sense drug policy remains a pipe dream.
