If you wonder why kids today are growing up with no respect for authority, it's because the authority figures in their lives are complete imbeciles. A 13 year old girl was given two days suspension for hugging her friends goodbye for the weekend. It wasn't even a full body hug. She threw her arm around their shoulders as any of us might do with a good friend.
District Superintendent Sam McGowen said that he thinks the penalty is fair and that administrators in the school east of St. Louis were following policy in the student handbook.
It states: “Displays of affection should not occur on the school campus at any time. It is in poor taste, reflects poor judgment, and brings discredit to the school and to the persons involved.”
I can't find words sufficient to express my contempt. And the real irony is, when this kid grows up and gets a job with some big corporation, she'll probably be sent on a retreat that requires hugging as a team building exercise.
