On the children's healthcare front, I think the GOP needs to realize that Bush couldn't care less whether his party remains viable or not. Everything he does is merely an exercise in wish fulfillment and presidential role playing. He's not interested in policy or strategy beyond what will retain the statutory power of the office he holds for the longest. And he already crossed that threshold.
Congressional Republicans need to do a little math. Obstruction plus unpopular positions equals losing at the polls guys. Figure out how to leash your president, or find another line of work.
