Suicide Bomb Kills 9 US Soldiers, Wounds 20

Reports are coming over the wiresd of a suicide bomb attack against a patrol base in Diyala province, "a volatile area that has been the site of fierce fighting involving U.S. and Iraqi troops, Sunni insurgents and Shiite militias." AP reports the military as saying 9 US soldiers were killed and a further 20 wounded.

Sky News adds that "The nine Task Force Lightning soldiers died of injuries sustained in the blast. Of those wounded, 15 soldiers were treated and returned to duty while five others and an Iraqi civilian were evacuated to a medical facility for further care."

Sky and Reuters are also reporting a series of 15 loud explosions coming from the outskirts of Baghdad before dawn on Tuesday. "A U.S. military spokesman said he was not aware of any operation taking place at the time. The blasts sounded like mortar shells or artillery."
