Casey wants more criminals in the Army

I'm getting to this story a little bit late but General Casey, Army Chief of Staff wants to increase the number of minimally literate, mildly criminal and motivationally challenged privates in the US Army. He also wants to increase the number of barely competent captains and majors but I have already discussed that early last month.

Fox News is reporting that this Saturday he stated that he wants to accelerate the increase of the US Army regular active duty end strength by 65,000 two years faster than planned.

The Army's new chief of staff says he wants to accelerate by two years a plan to increase the nation's active-duty soldiers by 65,000.

The Army has set 2012 as its target date for a force expansion to 547,000 troops, but Gen. George Casey said Saturday that he has told his staff to have the soldiers ready earlier.

"I said that's too long. Go back and tell me what it would take to get it done faster," he said in an interview with The Associated Press during a stop in Hawaii....

Defense Secretary Robert Gates in January said he was recommending to the president that the Army boost its active-duty soldiers by 65,000 to 547,000. Casey said about 35,000 of those additional soldiers are already in place.


Some of the increase in active duty end strength will occur from increased retention by a combination of improved incentives/bonuses/preferred assignments and trainings for individuals who otherwise would have left the regular Army, improved retention by individuals that the Army believes would best be civilians, more stop-loss orders and increased recruitment.

If one assumes that the 80,001th through 87,000th recruits, which this acceleration would require for the Army to meets its goals, are fairly similar to the 80,000th recruit which is how many recruits it needs to maintain current end strength, then this means a significant increase in criminal background, education and fitness waivers above and beyond the all volunteer force's record number of waivers and low quality recruits that the Army is currently taking in. These new privates will also be led by lower quality officers as the US Army internal quality control system has broken down and any officer with a pulse is being promoted. The US Army is adapting a quantity over quality approach to paper over its manpower and mission dysfunction.
