Why Newshog Uses StatCounter

Via Mathaba.Net, another StatCounter user:

One of the most popular web statistics companies that counts visitors to websites and provides metrics of use to webmasters and site owners, has turned down an offer from an advertising company.

The company which was not named, had offered to pay StatCounter to include a spyware cookie on all of its member sites, thus tracking millions of visitors every hour of the day. StatCounter is used by a great many web sites worldwide due to its ease of use, reliability, statistics and free service offered to smaller sites, while larger sites pay a small fee for the service.

The amount of money offered was said to be substantial and StatCounter turned the offer down "on the spot";, according to the company blog, which added: "You install StatCounter to track visitors to your site NOT to open yourself and your visitors up to being spied upon by phantom advertising corporations."

According to StatCounter, other players in the world of web statistics were happy to take up this offer - another well known statistics provider is allowing up to 9 cookies to be installed in the browser of every visitor that hits one of their member websites. This means that the provider is making money by transmitting data on web sites and their visitors to a third party advertiser.

StatCounter is a company based in Ireland that provides ethical web tracking services to site owners and webmasters that allows them to measure the number of visitors, which pages are visited, and tracks visitors navigation through a website to allow for sites to improve their navigational design, along with some other web metrics. No personally identifying information is contained in these statistics.
