Everyone's talking about it. Dubai Ports World have said they will
divest themselves of all US holdings.
Sen. John Warner (R-Va.) announced on the Senate floor shortly before 2 p.m. that Dubai Ports World would "transfer fully the operations of U.S. ports to a U.S. entity." Warner, who had been trying to broker a compromise on the issue, said DP World would divest itself of U.S. interests "in an orderly fashion" so as not to suffer "economic loss."
Of all the commenters today, the words I agree most with come from
Mathew at Centerfield - who was a moderate Republican until today. The COO of DP World saying the decision was made to preserve the strong relationship between Dubai and the US. Mathew says:
There is not a strong relationship. When one's relationship depends on the actions of political leaders that have become so cloaked in partisanship and security hysteria, there is not a strong relationship. When your actions since September 11th are meaningless because of those you took before September 11th and you just happen to be the wrong skin color and from a part of the world that doesn't have the right faith, there is not a strong relationship. When one side of the deal completely and utterly fails to live up to their end of the bargain, there is not a strong relationship.
There's far more too, and all worth reading. Highly recommended.
