It's been illuminating this week to see the Right scurry in every direction like roaches when the light is switched on.
Prominent members of the political Right are falling over themselves to declare neoconservatism a failure or distance themselves from Bush's policies. Way back when it began with Bruce Bartlett, Richard Viguerie and John DiIulio. Last week Francis Fukayama told us the neocon movement was dead, buried under the weight of it's own hubris. Then Bill O'Reilly stepped up to declare it was time to leave Iraq "as fast as humanly possible".On Friday it was William Buckley declaring the adventure in Iraq, one that Buckley and the other neocons goaded Bush into, a failure.
Even cheerleaders like George Will have had to admit that Iraq is in a state of civil war. He realises that allowing armed militias was always going to create this kind of cirumstance - but doesn't have the nerve to admit that conservatives largely ignored that possibility leaving the Left to keep bringing it up in urgent tones. When we did, we were told we were being defeatist.
Now it's Bill Kristol who is dancing around on one leg, trying to not look like he advocated the disaster even he realises Iraq has become while still supporting Bush.
Glenn Greenwald has another great post noting that the Bush cheerleading squad's reaction has been to say, in effect, "But we aren't any kind of conservatives, we are Bushites".
I prefer the term Busheviks. It preempts the day when the sycophants will remember that the neocons began life as Trotskyites and call the whole think a communist plot to lead astray their one, true, Saviour and Leader - Dubya.
