To have a very high traffic blog a necessary condition is that you post consistently a lot. It means that great writers who take a lot of time to craft their prose are unlikely to have a high traffic blog. That is not unfair or wrong or anything, that's just not how you generate consistently high traffic. If you are a tremendous writer who spends lots of time crafting your prose, blogging is perhaps not the best medium for you except as a useful tool for self promotion if your goal is high daily readership.
So now great bloggers who take some time and care about their writing while still getting great traffic know that Duncan thinks they should give up blogging. Or maybe do some more "open threads". Lovely.
Let's see now...Daily Kos (518596 visits/day ); Common Dreams (105774 visits/day); Kevin Drum (52553 visits/day); The Smirking Chimp (38160 visits/day); TalkLeft (22355 visits/day); MyDD (17288 visits/day); Pandagon (12851 visits/day) - to name but a few who according to Duncan should hang up their keyboards.
But then who would he link to in his snarky punchposts?
Blogs that are really just aggregators with little real content like Eschaton and Instapundit are incredibly useful for other bloggers and those two were among the first such so have always kept their high readership even though there are now better blogs doing the same thing. Still, it's rather puke-making that Duncan Atrios needs to diss those who provide his feedstock. Even Glenn has more class than that.
