I hope to hell that the Dems had this one worked out in advance - it would be a good sign when there's been precious few of late.
Senator Reid sandbagged Bill Frist and the League of Extrordinarily Corrupt Gentlemen today when he forced a closed Senatorial session to question Bush's lies in the run-up to the war on Iraq.
They have repeatedly chosen to protect the Republican administration rather than get to the bottom of what happened and why," Democratic leader Harry Reid said.
Taken by surprise, Republicans derided the move as a political stunt.
"The United States Senate has been hijacked by the Democratic leadership," said Majority Leader Bill Frist of Tennessee. "They have no convictions, they have no principles, they have no ideas," the Republican leader said.
Democrats sought assurances that Intelligence Committee Chairman Pat Roberts of Kansas would complete the second phase of an investigation of the administration's prewar intelligence.
After about two hours, senators returned to open session having appointed a six-member task force — three members from each party — to review the committee's progress and report back to their respective leaders by Nov. 14.
Reid completely usurped the media tsunami Bush created by naming Alito for SCOTUS - a man so wingnutty in a quiet way that he reminds one almost too strongly of the Kansas BTK type - and refocussed it back on Libby, Iraq and the lies the administration told. From now on, the two should hold equal exposure.
"The Libby indictment provides a window into what this is really all about, how this administration manufactured and manipulated intelligence in order to sell the war in Iraq and attempted to destroy those who dared to challenge its actions," Reid said before invoking Senate rules that led to the closed session.
Of course it was politics - the Republicans are moaning because it was the kind of stunt they would pull and they've gotten too used to Democrats being nicey-nice.
Nice move, Harry.
