Every year on May Eve, atop a hill in the centre of Edinburgh, the world's biggest Beltane celebration gets going just after dusk. Beltane is the pagan festival that marks the beginning of the warm part of the year in Northern Europe, and traditionally it's a time for casting off inhibitions and enjoying being alive. This year, some 8,000 revellers joined the 100 drummers and the procession on Calton Hill in an event that was, as usual, fun and good-natured.
Scott Hamilton, 23, said: "It was an incredible atmosphere - everyone was getting into it. Some people were stripping off and dancing along behind the parade. It was totally unlike anything I’d ever been to before."
To find out what this amazing event looks like (but not sounds like - the thunder of 100 drums in your bones is indescribable) check out pics from previous years that are scattered around the website of the Beltane Fire Society, the organisation which hosts the rituals and party.
Nest year, just go to Scotland and join in. I will be there.
