Lock Them Up or Shoot Them?

Joe Gandelman, guest-blogging for the Dean's World blog, picked up on the 'American Gulag' story from the Washington Post yesterday, and then republished my challenge to the Right to speak out against this heinious trampling on their own basic beliefs about liberty and law. Joe's article was noted by Instapundit as part of his coverage of the story.(Yes, I am aware of the irony that it is easier for opinion by a socialist like me to reach the heady heights of the Right's top blogs than those of the Left...and neither Atrios or Matt seems to have even noticed this assault on the very idea of the law yet.)

Joe notes that Republican Senator Richard Lugar of Indiana, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee has already spoken out against this plan, telling Fox News Sunday that ""It's a bad idea. So we ought to get over it and we ought to have a very careful, constitutional look at this."

Looking at the comments on Dean's World and a couple of other Right-wing blogs who appear to have picked up the issue from Instapundits link to Joe such as Pajama Pundits and The American Mind, I would say about 40% of Republicans are sufficiently un-brainwashed to figure out that this trampling on the very concepts behind the US Constitution is a very bad idea. The rest? Well, let me just quote Avedon Carol at the Sideshow who says Americans should "weep for our country...What a face we present to the world."

Come on, Republicans - speak out against this travesty of what you believe in! Liberals, pick up this issue and send out the challenge!
